China has blocked a second move to put the Sri Lankan issue on the United Nations Security Council agenda, reports said.
A foreign news agency said that China had vehemently opposed the move and argued that it is ‘merely an internal matter,’ and not a threat to international peace and security.
Non-permanent Council members including Austria, Mexico, and Costa Rica have requested the meeting for March 26th, under the heading ‘Other Matters’ since Sri Lanka is still not a formal item on the Council’s agenda.
Sri Lanka’s mission to the UN has contacted council members to make this same argument, the report added.
Previously, Russia has blocked a similar move in the Council. (Colombopage)
