‘Communal politics should be done away with’ – Nazeer Ahmed

Communal politics was the bane of the country. Communal political parties should re-assess their stands on the issues confronting minority groups and re-shape their politics to suit the needs of all the people in the country. "Communal is anathema to me," said Leader of the Democratic Unity Alliance (DUA) Nazeer Ahmed at the opening of the DUA branch at Kew road in Slave Island in support of the candidature of T. S. Raja.

The DUA chairman added that Islam was an egalitarian faith and had no room for communal politics. The early history of Islam, especially in Spain, is testimony to this fact where Jews and Christians held high posts in Spain when it was governed by Muslims’.

He said communal parties have not fulfilled their promises. "Do you see any development in the schools in your area? Do you see any development in infrastructure facilities like roads in your area? Do you see any development in the water supply in your area? Is there any improvement in public toilets in your area? The population has grown rapidly but there has been no improvement in public utilities’.

He said this goes to show those who cheated you of the voters, were only after the riches that office provided them with. Ahmed emphasised "this is obvious for everyone to see."

Ahmed said that communal politics had upset the equilibrium of society dividing people on caste, creed and religious lines. "Instead of bringing people together as one nation, those politicians dabbling in communalism have thrived on dividing the people for their selfish ends" he said’, They have made hay while the sun shone’. He added that the sun will not shine for them anymore as they stand exposed and that the people will throw them out at the forthcoming Provincial Council elections. "People are flocking around the Democratic Unity Alliance because they know the party stands for equality, justice and fair play," he said adding that the DUA was open to all people who love to call themselves Sri Lankans.

He pointed out that most of the candidates who are contesting the Provincial Council elections were not aware of their functions and were actually conducting their campaigns like they were contesting Parliamentary elections. "Provincial Councils are a different ball game and all our candidates are trained for social service work which is what Provincial Councils are designed for."
