Samskrti Journal is back!

Samskrti Journal is back as a regular quarterly publication. Volume 20, Number I will be presented to the reading public at the monthly meeting of the Samskrti Prakashana Sangamaya at 10.00 a.m. on 28 the March 2009. The meeting will take place at the Ecumenical Centre 490/5 Havelock Road, Colombo 06. You are most welcome to the occasion.

Samskrti Volume 20 Number I will bring you the high quality reading that you always expected of it. Amaradasa Virasinha, founder editor, and veteran literary critic, reviews Siri Gunasinhge’s , ‘Miringuva’ and writes on his special area Mythology. Very aptly, Yasasiri (Y.W.) Gunawardhana, well known for his writings in Sinhala on capital markets, wakes you up to the risks and rewards of investing in the stock market and other places. G.Usvatte-aratchi, the economist, discusses the state in the economy, a subject of major controversy in the new circumstances of capitalist economies. M.B.Mathmaluve writes (in English) a personal story of his love for the Samskrti Journal. The cinema under review is "Machan’.

Volume 20 Number II is now ready for editing. Eric de Silva, a public servant of high distinction, writes about policy making in education and by implication elsewhere in government. Simon Urugodavatte presents major argument presented by many writers and policy makers in the past why teaching in school in the first language is by far the wisest policy regarding the medium of instruction. G.Usvatte-aratchi writes on one of your major concerns, ‘Our Schools’. Susil Sirivardana, one of the brilliant editors of Samskrti forty years ago, reviews the movie ‘Vala patala’ and writes a short note on Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who died in 2008. P.G.Punchihewa, Civil Servant, scholar and writer introduces you to Pramoedya Ananta Toer, the foremost prose writer of Indonesia. W.A. Abeysinghe, veteran writer and commentator writes a long review of ‘Samajaya, artikaya ha adyapanaya’. And much more.

Samskrti is back, indeed. However it will thrive to the extent that contributors and subscribers will enrich and sustain it. That was precisely the experience 60 years ago when the Journal began. Editors welcome contributions in all areas that Samskrti publishes material on from both senior scholars and novices. Creative writing in the form of short stories and poems are very welcome. Instructions to authors will appear in the Journal.

Once Samskrti sold 5,000 copies of an issue. It is that readership that will sustain Samskrti. The Journal is as effective as the number of people who read it. The Journal can go on only if subscribers pay for its continuance. Editors urge all to subscribe to the Journal and join in this adventure. Come to the meeting at 10.00 a.m. on 28 March at the Ecumenical Centre, 490/5 Havelock Road, Colombo 6. The Editors welcome you warmly. For information call Sanjeeva or Kapila at 250 9445.
