Lane discipline, the need

I agree with L. L. Samarasinghe (Letters 19 March) when he says that the traffic lights will effectively control traffic, without the intervention of traffic policemen. What traffic policemen could usefully do is enforce lane discipline. What angers a driver most is to be stranded in a lane going ahead, until scores of drivers on the right turning lane force themselves in.

There is no need for any paper work or fines. All that has to be done is to compel traffic, on exclusively right turning lanes, to turn right. They will soon learn their lesson when they are diverted and have to make a circuitous route to return.
