-Sri Lanka Telecom, the nation's number one integrated communication service provider launched the first Braille Bill last week. The company is the first telecommunications company to launch a Braille Bill. A ceremony was held at the Company's Head Office premises, during which Ms. Leisha De Silva Chandrasena, Chairperson, SLT presented these Braille Bills.
Those present at the launch ceremony were Ms. Leisha De Silva Chandrasena - Chairperson, SLT, Greg Young - Chief Executive Officer, SLT, the Chief Officers of SLT, Cyril Siriwardena - President, Disability Organizations Joint Front (DOJF) as well as the selected customers. In the future, the Braille bill will be posted to these 50 customers every month, along with the printed bill. Any other customers who may require this service, simply has to make an initial request for the facility and thereafter, they too can be benefitted by this service.
SLT embarked on this project with the invaluable support of the DOJF, who will be responsible for the printing and distribution of the Braille Bills. The Disability Organizations Joint Front is an umbrella body for disability organizations in Sri Lanka which aims to protect the rights of differently-abled persons including those with physical, intellectual, visual and hearing disabilities.
The Braille Bill launch was instituted in line with SLT's recent endeavours to minimize the gap between the differently-abled community and other people in society. This programme caters to the visually impaired customers in an attempt to empower them to lead independent lives as far as possible inspite of their impairment. Last year, SLT donated Braille books to the Ceylon School for the Deaf and Blind, under its annual CSR Project "Spreading the wealth of knowledge".
