At a time when the reputation of Sri Lanka is being sullied in all directions by the international fora, we must be justifiably proud of the contributions made by two of our outstanding intellectuals, namely Professor Rajhiv Wijesinghe and Dr Dayan Jayatileka in negating the sordid efforts of powerful international groups to paint our country black. Even when the armed forces are carrying out outstanding humanitarian work sometimes at the risk of their own lives, which no other country in the world has done,it isindeed a tragic shame and ingratitude of the highest order that their noble services have not been presented to the world in a proper manner.
The Foreign Missions of the country and all the UN Members should have been sent Video recordings of the outstanding humanitarian work carried out by our Forces of rescue operations of civilians escaping the clutches
of the most ruthless terrorist organisation in the world and the treatment afforded to them thereafter.I have never ever heard or seen in the media of such noble humanitarian work carried out by the Armed Services of any country in the world. Naval troops wading deep into water and carrying old and the sick to safety in their bare hands, Naval medical personnel even helping to deliver babies in their ship, the old men and women being fed with their own hands, little babies being looked after by the women sailors and soldiers - these and more humanitarian is being carried out throughout 24 hours of the day. Everyone of the 50,000 civilians who have escaped the clutches of the brutal L.T.T.E. are treated in this manner. In fact our Armed Services are a role model to the rest of the World. Then why are these foreign organisations sullying our image inthis manner and some of them even requesting U.N. Sanctions? Evidently our Foreign MInistry has let down the Country as well as the heroic Armed Services. I hope the Foreign Ministry will wake up from its slumber and carry out a vigourous campaign to undo the terrible damage that has been done to the country by our enemies.
We are fortunate to read outstanding editorials and other news in the media of the aforesaid humanitarian work of our brave servicemen. My appeal to the Editors of the leading Newspapers of this country is for them to take this matter up with the Foreign Media of all countries, and inform them of the correct situation so that at least the shortcomings of the Foreign Ministry will be reduced to a certain extent.
