One dead, 270 warded after eating bakery products

One person died and 270 were hospitalized due to food poisoning in Trincomalee yesterday.

Among those admitted to the Hospital were 202 children from all schools in the Trincomalee town area. They took ill after eating buns and bread from a bakery in King’s Street, Trincomalee.

The victim was Sivaraja Naresingham (60) of King’s Street, Trincomalee. Around 50 had been discharged after treatment, hospital sources said.

Those who consumed food products of the bakery had complained that they felt faint and wanted to vomit hours later.

Education authorities suspended academic activities in the schools in the Trincomalee town area as students and teachers were being admitted to hospital with symptoms of allergy, school sources said.

It was not known when schools will re-open at the time this edition went to the press.

Trincomalee police have recorded statements from the workers at the bakery which was sealed.
