Ceasefire in 24 hours?
SLFP scoffs at Ryan’s threat
Bigger torpedos had been fired but the government has not given in, Senior Vice President of the SLFP Nimal Siripala de Silva said in reply to British Labour MP John Ryan’s threat that if Sri Lanka does not respond to his call for ceasefire within 24 hours, Prime Minister Gordon Brown should suspend Sri Lanka from the Commonwealth.
Minister Dulles Alahapperuma said that though Sri Lanka had a small population of around 19 million and was small country geographically it was not ready to surrender its Sovereignty to any country.
Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said that Sri Lanka with a competent Foreign Minister and High Commissioner in London to deal with such threats need not take any notice of such threats.
The Leader of the National Freedom Front and MP Wimal Weerawansa said that it was well known fact that MP John Ryan came from a Constituency where a majority of Tamils lived and was known for his support and sympathies to the LTTE so his rumblings were nothing to be taken seriously.
