Are women really free? – A
response
In her article "Are Women
Really free?" published in The Island of 23/03/09 Miss Sivagurunathan has
accurately stated that women have achieved a certain degree of
emancipation over the years. She also says that there are still a large
number of unaddressed issues facing women. That is a very realistic
statement too. Miss Sivagurunathan also argues that International
Women’s Day should not be celebrated. May I draw her attention to the fact
that on IWD it is possible to raise social awareness and examine the
ongoing struggle women face worldwide. Needless to say such a strategy
provides women’s groups with an opportunity to lobby governments to deal
with unaddressed issues.
The reforms women have achieved in relation to emancipation thus far,
affords our daughters and grand- daughters wider options and many of those
reforms were brought to public attention its embryonic on IWD. To do away
with IWD is to do away with the possibility of ever addressing the
pressing issues women face today. Isn’t IWD a wonderful day to celebrate
what women have done, are doing and can do?
