Mary Immaculate Convent reign
supreme at Ja-Ela Division athletic meet

Athletes of the Mary Immaculate Convent with school officials and the trophies they won.

The athletes of Mary Immaculate Convent, Tudella won the Girls’ Overall Championship at the Ja-Ela Division Inter School Athletic Championship which was worked off from March 2-4 at De Mazenod College Ground.

Aggregating a total of 197 points, their athletes won the Overall Girls’ Championship beating St. Sebastian’s Girls’ School, Kandana (63 points) and De Mazenod College (59) to second and third places, respectively.

Incidentally, apart from winning the overall championship, their lasses collected all the Best Athlete’s prizes from the Under-15 to Under-21 age groups. Surprisingly, they have achieved this notable feat despite not having a proper ground for them to train.

While D. Hashini Shiranthi Rajakula (Under-15), Dinesh Madushani Perera (Under-17) and G.W. Sanduni Vimodani Fonseka (Under-19) were the winners of the Best Athlete awards in the three lower age groups, Y. G. Thilini Madushika Dassanayake and W .B. Sachini Asha Appuhami were the joint Best Athletes in the Under-23 category.

Meanwhile, Hashini Shiranthi Rajakula was adjudged the Best Athlete in the Junior Category.

They also won the Field Event Championship of the event with an aggregate of 59 points.

While MIC athletes reigned at the Athletic Championship, their friends came up with flying colours in the team events of the Ja-Ela Education Division Team Sports. In the volleyball, their Under-19 team won the Division Championship while the Under-17 and Under-15 teams won the second runner-up position in their age categories.

In the Netball Championships their Under-15 team won the championship while the Under-19 team had to settle for the first runner-up position.

According to the students they have been able to win accolades because of the dedication of Rev. Sr. Grace Fernando, the Principal, Chamari Ariyawansa and Kumari Sovis, the Teachers in Charge of Sports, Suvini A. Jayawickrama, the Teacher in Charge of Netball, Nilantha Dilruk and Ratnasiri Perera and Vajira Pushpamali, the coaches of the school.
