ENGLISHWOMEN TO THE FORE

Nicky Shaw and Holly Colvin took the winning run. The target was a modest 167 in 50 overs. England were home in the 47th. Charlotte Edwards’s Englishwomen had thus defeated their Kiwi rivals, who were looking for their 2nd title win, in Sydney --the very city where Jonny Wilkinson’s English rugby men’s team won int’l glory in 2003-- to win the ICC Women’s World Cup for a 3rd time, by 4 wickets, last Sunday (March 22). Shaw was the chief contributor for their win taking a career best 4 for 34. Englishwomen have now won the world title in 1973, ’93 and 2009 but their male counterparts are yet to record a similar success, though there have been 9 World Cups played since 1975 in the male segment of the sport.
