Sri Lanka begins 50th Davis Cup campaign

The biggest (men’s) international tennis event for Sri Lanka, Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Zone Group-III, will begin at Hamadanya Sports Centre outdoor hard courts in Aleppo, Syria, tomorrow (13).

Sri Lanka, who took part in 1953 for the first time in this largest annual international team sports event or the men’s World Cup of tennis, began in 1900, will enter into her 50th year participation this year at the ancient city of Aleppo situated about 360kms away from capital Damascus.

Sri Lanka has featured in Davis Cup for 23 years since 1953 up to 1976. Then, after a lapse of five years, they have been playing in Davis Cup for 26 years uninterrupted; since 1982 to last year (2008).

The reigning Davis Cup world champion is Spain. The global sponsor of Davis Cup is BNP Paribas, one of the main banks in Europe. Davis Cup is an event held under the auspices of the International Tennis Federation.

Aasiri iddamalgoda (Non-Playing Captain/Manager), Rajeev Rajapakse, Harshana Godamanna, Sankha Atukorale and Guyanga Weerasekera.

The Participating Countries/Regions in Asia-Oceania Zone Group-III:

Iran, Lebanon, Pacific Oceania, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Syria and Tajikistan.
