Tigers massacre 12 civilians in Moneragala

Troops are on a heightened state of alert to meet the threat posed by LTTE cadres targeting civilians in areas outside the Northern and Eastern Provinces.

Close on the heels of massacre of nine men, women and children at Mahagodayaya in the Moneragala district on Sunday (April 12), LTTE cadres killed three civilians at Galitemara also in the same district.

The army said that both attacks had been carried out by an LTTE group operating in the area.

Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara told The Island that villagers had been preparing to celebrate the Sinhala and Hindu New Year when terrorists stormed the village killing two elderly women and one man on Monday.

Police also found one woman with severe cut injuries.

Sunday‚Äôs victims included a one and half year of old boy, seven and eleven year old children, three women and three more men. The police rescued one 75-year-old woman wounded in the attack.
