President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday visited Kilinochchi as the army battled LTTE units holding over 50,000 people hostage in a civilian safety zone on the Mullaitivu coast.

In the run up to the liberation of Kilinochchi in the first week of January, the LTTE declared that the capture of the town would be a daydream of Mahinda Rajapaksa.

During his almost three-hour visit, the first by a Head of State, the President received a briefing from the army regarding operations conducted by the 57 and 58 Divisions and the ongoing final phase of the offensive to rescue the trapped...
