Japan tells LTTE to free civilians

Japan has called upon the LTTE to allow freedom of movement of civilians and ensure their safety.

In a statement issued by the Embassy of Japan in Colombo, it was said that the country was concerned that a large number of internally displaced persons are in a difficult situation in the Northern part of Sri Lanka. "In this regard Japan welcomed the two day truce announced by the Government to give the civilian population a chance to be released from the No Fire Zone." It said.

The release also recalled the recent visit of special envoy Yasushi Akashi and said it was strongly working on the concerned parties, including President Mahinda Rajapaksa to ensure the safety of the IDPs.
