KANDY: The two suspects held in connection with the death of the Sri Lankan medical student of an American university were allowed bail in cash and surety by Kandy High Court Judge Bandula Karunaratne.

The judge warned the suspects against the use of force on any of the witnesses in the case.
The duo were held in connection with the death of Indika Prasanna Padeniya (25), a medical student of a university in American who had returned home to spend the holidays.
Police investigations stated that the deceased was attacked with a cricket bat and set on fire after petrol was poured on him. The alleged tragedy had occurred on 15.8.2008 in the Naula sector. The student succumbed to the injuries at the Kandy General Hospital on 15.9.2008, police reported.
High Court Judge Bandula Karunaratne allowed bail after having considered a bail application by Wijaya Wickremaratne President’s Counsel with attorneys Nimal Suraweera and (Ms) Jeevanie Herath.
Wijaya Wickremaratne P.C. in his submissions moving for bail told Court that the suspects were on remand for the last seven months and that the investigations into the case by police were completed.
Counsel Wickremaratne also said that the first suspect was prepared to surrender his passport.
However, State Counsel Asela Serasinghe recorded his strong opposition to bail being allowed to the two suspects.
