Sri Lankans go down fighting
What had been a terrific run for them in the Asia-Pacific Beach Volleyball Championship conducted by Asian Volleyball Federation came to an end when Sri Lanka failed to qualify for the quarter-finals of the third leg of the tournament here in Thailand yesterday.
Sri Lanka showed excellent temperament in the first two legs of the tourney coming up with country’s best ever effort in beach volleyball so far, but in the final leg against the stronger opponents, they failed and were unable to make it to the last eight to progress further in the tournament.
Dammika Silva and Pubudu Ekanayake representing the Sri Lankan men’s team were beaten by the Chinese team while the women’s duo of Thakshila Neranjali and W.W. Sujeeva were beaten by the Australian team.
In the women’s contest, Sri Lanka secured the first set 21-17 and were leading 11-9 in the second set, but Australia bounced back to win the game 21-15 and booked a berth for the next round when they won the third set 15-9.
The men’s duo went down fighting to the Chinese 21-19 and 21-12 losing two sets to nil ending what had been a successful campaign thus far.
