IC calls SGM to vote for constitutional reforms
Rugby Interim Committee Chaired by Dr. Maiya Gunasekere has called for a Special General Meeting on May 5 to make the provincial unions vote on the proposed changes to the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) constitution.
Secretary Rugby Interim Committee Kiran Atapattu told ‘The Island’ that one of the focal areas, where a voting will take place, is on the voting rights of provincial unions.
"The present voting system isn’t favoured by most provincial unions. For example Central Province which has just one club playing A Division rugby, enjoys the same number of votes as Western Province which has a lot more clubs than that. Most clubs playing in the A Division tournament have voiced their disapproval on how votes have been allocated. Even the Army Commander Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka has written to me requesting a change in the voting structure," said Atapattu.
He said that the Sports Minister had taken into consideration all these grievances and called for a reviewing of the SLRFU constitution.
Atapattu said that a meeting had been called recently of representatives of all provincial unions to obtain their views on the proposed changes.
"Once the final draft is made by Rugby Interim Committee Chairman Dr. Maiya Gunasekere, taking into account the responses of provincial union representatives to the proposed changes to the constitution, the voting will take place," Atapattu said.
Atapattu said that he would practice democracy in bringing about a change in the voting system of the SLRFU constitution.
Dr. Maiya Gunasekere when contacted said that provincial union representatives had unanimously agreed to the proposed changes to the SLRFU constitution, except for a few.
Atapattu also said that the Annual General Meeting of the SLRFU would be held as soon as he is provided with all documents required to conduct the AGM. He added that these documents should conform within the Sports Law.
