More welfare villages for displaced - Bathiurdeen
68,273 have fled from LTTE

Resettlement Minister Rishard Bathiurdeen yesterday said that the government will establish two more 'welfare villages' with all basic facilities for internally displaced persons rescued from the LTTE.

There are four such villages already established by the government in the Menik Farm area and in the Arunachalam, Kadirgarmar and Ananda Coomaraswamy villages over 100,000 displaced persons have been accommodated, he said.

They will have electricity, water supply, post offices, banks, health care, schools, etc., the Minister said.

"So far 68,273 persons have fled the Tiger controlled areas and moved in to the government controlled areas. Of these the majority (57,938 belonging to 19,367) have been accommodated in Vavuniya," he pointed out.

There are also around 1500 elderly people over 60 years among them, he added.

In addition there are six welfare villages established in Jaffna and 15 welfare centres operate in Vavuniya, he said.

Four Task Forces have been established to function under the purview of the Vavuniya Government Agent, to look in to food, water, healthcare, education, etc., of the IDPs.

"Gradually, we will be releasing the schools that have been taken over for the purpose of accommodating the sudden influx of IDPs. Gamini Maha Vidyalaya and Tamil Maha Vidyalaya in Vavuniya will be the first to be released in this order," Bathiurdeen explained.
