Murder suspect shielded, court deceived by police – JVP
Accusing the police of shielding Kignsley Kasturiarchchi, the chief suspect in the Nandana Balage murder investigation, the JVP yesterday said that it could prove an unholy alliance between the wanted man and law enforcement officers.
The JVP said that the police had ignored a court directive to arrest suspects wanted in connection with the investigation. Although, the police had repeatedly claimed that the suspects couldn’t be tracked down, at least the chief was in touch with the police, the JVP said.
The JVP yesterday called a press conference where it played a secretly produced video tape in which Kasturiarchchi who contests the Gampaha district on the government ticket is captured shaking hands with a police officer. The JVP said that the recording was made after the killing of Nandana.
Addressing the press, JVP heavyweight Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that the police were reluctant to take action as the chief suspect was a nominee of Wimal Weerawansa, MP. He claimed that the T-56 assault rifle used in the killing had been issued by the Defence Ministry and that there absolutely no truth in the assertion that it belonged to the LTTE or some other underworld group.
He said that JVP was ready to produce an eyewitness account of the attack on the JVP.
