Delhi beats Punjab by 10 wickets

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) - The Delhi Daredevils beat Kings XI Punjab by 10 wickets Sunday in an Indian Premier League match twice shortened due to rain.

Led by Virender Sehwag’s 38 off 16 balls, Delhi reached 58-0 off 4.5 overs chasing 54 from six after Punjab had scored 104-7 off 12 overs at Newlands.

Sehwag blasted four boundaries and three sixes, while opening partner Gautam Gambhir hit 15 off 13 balls.

Punjab captain Yuvraj Singh said Delhi became favorites once the target was revised.

"I think its always the case," Yuvraj said. "That is what happened. We, however, take some positives from it."

Sehwag agreed.

"Yes, it’s easier to chase because you get to know the total you want," he said. "You are more free to go for the ball."

Left-arm Daredevils spinner Daniel Vettori claimed 3-15, removing Ravi Bopara (22), Kumar Sangakkara (8) and Mahela Jayawardene (6) in three consecutive overs to slow the scoring by the Kings XI.

Karan Goel top-scored for Punjab with 38, hitting three boundaries and three sixes in 21 balls. Goel and Bopara put on an opening stand of 67 in six overs before Punjab lost 6-37 in the second half of its innings.

Sehwag won the toss and opted to bowl on a moist pitch that looked favorable for seam bowling, but Goel and Bopara dominating the new ball pair of Dirk Nannes and Aavishkar Salvi.

The 22-year-old Goel smashed two sixes off Yo Mahesh over long-off, while Bopara also belted two sixes in his innings before the two openers fell in quick succession.

Goel went first when he was caught at mid-off by Vettori off Mahesh. In the next over, Vettori pitched a good line to trap Bopara plumb lbw with no runs added to the total.

Vettori collected his second wicket by inducing a top edge from Sangakkara which was gathered by Nannes at mid-on.

Yuvraj came in and hit Vettori for two sixes. But he was dismissed for 16 in the same 11th over, run out by Dinesh Karthik’s throw to Vettori.

Two balls later, Jayawardene was caught by Dilshan at mid-off, and Piyush Chawla was run out for 0 on the next delivery.

In the Daredevils’ reply, Sehwag and Gambhir took nine runs off the opening over by Irfan Pathan’s opening over and then flayed 19 off the second by Yusuf Abdulla to set up the win.
