Charged with obstructing propaganda rally
Gampaha district parliamentarian released on bail

Wattala Magistrate and Additional District Judge Rashantha Godawela, yesterday released on Rs 10,000 cash bail and Rs 600,000 personal bail, Gampaha District Parliamentarian Niel Rupasinghe who was charged with unlawful assembly and obstructing the election propaganda rally of UPFA Western Province Council candidate Thushara Perera.

Police was also ordered to produce the son of the Parliamentarian, Opposition leader of Wattala Pradeshya Sabha, four policemen attached to Ministerial Security Division and a private security guard of the MP.

They were released on Rs 100,000 personal bail.

Another four supporters of the MP, who were alleged to have attacked and caused damage to the Propaganda Office of Thushara Perera in Mabola and assaulting a person named Wasantha Duleep Perera, were released on Rs 10,000 cash bail each and Rs 500,000 personal bail.

The Counsel for the defence argued that both Niel Rupasinghe and the Opposition leader of the Wattala Pradeshya Sabha have also lodged complaints at the Wattala Police of harassment to them by the prosecution. It was noted that Wattala Police had acted in a partial manner.
