Kandy - At a special meeting to discuss the development of the Kandy General Hospital, it was unanimously decided to move funeral parlours away from the main entrance to the General Hospital.
Kandy Mayor L. B. Aluwihare, who moved the proposal, pointed out that the presence of undertakers in close proximity to the hospital, especially at the entrance to the hospital, caused mental agony to patients and relations.
The land currently used by undertakers could be utilised for a better purpose, Mayor Aluwihare said.
Governor Central, Tikiri Kobbekaduwa while supporting the Mayor’s proposal said that the Municipal Council should not have granted approval to undertakers to conduct business at such locations.
The land could be used for a vehicle park for the hospital, he said.
President, Kandy General Hospital Committee Mohan Samarakoon chaired the meeting at the hospital auditorium yesterday (24) afternoon.
Central Provincial Council’s Health Minister Ediriweera Weerawardena, Kandy District Additional Secretary (Ms) Kumudu Karunaratne, Deputy Director, Kandy General Hospital Dr. W. K. H. Dissanayake, Hospital Secretary Ananda de Silva, doctors, bank officials and heads of Kandy schools were among the participants at the meeting.
