CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) - Yusuf Pathan led Rajasthan Royals to victory over Kolkata Knight Riders in a Super Over in an Indian Premier League thriller at Newlands on Thursday.

The match was officially tied after Kolkata ended on 150-8 in response to Rajasthan’s 150-6.

In the Super Over, the league tiebreaker, Kolkata made 15-1. Rajasthan captain Shane Warne entrusted 18-year-old fast bowler Kamran Khan with the over and Chris Gayle hit three boundaries on the off side.

Pathan took only four balls to win the match, smashing two sixes, a boundary and two runs off spinner Ajantha Mendis.

Kolkata captain Brendon McCullum defended his decision to give the ball to Mendis.

"We had few options, and Mendis is a credible bowler," he said. "They were just too good for us."

Warne praised Kamran for holding his nerve in the Super Over.

"Kamran bowled a superb Super Over. Chris Gayle whacked a couple, but he stood firm."

After Rajasthan posted a competitive total, it looked on course for victory when Kolkata slumped to 94-5, with Warne rotating his bowlers shrewdly.

But at 125-5 in the 16th over, Sourav Ganguly hit a six off a no ball from Munaf Patel and followed with another six over long on, off the back foot. Ganguly smacked 46 off 30 balls, but with two runs needed to win off the last two balls, he nicked a Kamran outswinger and was caught behind.

Then Ishant Sharma made one to tie the score and was run out by a Kamran throw on the last ball, setting up the Super Over.

Kamran took 3-19 and Warne 2-25.

Earlier, Pathan topscored for Rajasthan with 42 off 21 balls with two sixes and six boundaries. Sharma, Mendis and Anureet Singh took two wickets apiece.
