The General Secretary of the UNP Tissa Attanayake, MP, said that the government manipulated battlefield victories to win the WPC as it did at the previous PC elections. There was no reason for them to crow about a resounding victory when they had made use of bloody war to deceive the voters.
He attributed the low voter turnout to threats and intimidation of voters by goons working for ruling party candidates. Despite their threats, the UNP had successfully retained the five electorates won by the party at the last elections to the WPC, he said, expressing satisfaction that the UNP had been able to maintain its hold on the city.
He slammed President Mahinda Rajapaksa for not having all PC polls on one day.
"If the government was so confident of winning why do they, without holding piece meal elections hold a General election so that we can teach them a lesson or two."
The National Organizer of the UNP S. B. Dissanayake admitted that the UNP would never be able to win elections unless they restructured the party.
He told ‘The Island’ that there was an urgent need to revamp the party, including far reaching changes to the Party Constitution.
He said that there was no point in going before the people without bringing in new faces to the top. "People are fed up with the old leadership. They want a change," he said.
