Removal of unauthorized vendors from
Kandy hospital road
thwarted by PC member
The Central Provincial Council member was elected for the first time at the Provincial Councils Election of February 14 for the first time.
The Emergency Unit, with the Police were present on the hospital road to clear the road to the General Hospital on the directions of the Mayor Aluwihare.
As the Emergency Unit Officers and the police arrived there to carry out the orders of the Mayor, the Provincial Council member appeared on the scene and raised strong objections to any attempt to remove the unauthorized vendors.
He warned the Municipal offers ‘not to touch them’. The Emergency Unit and the police, then withdrew from the scene.
Mayor Aluwihare was not available for comment as he was in Colombo on official engagement.
When asked for comments, Deputy Mayor Suminda Wickremasinghe said that he too received the news of the incident that the Municipal Emergency Unit was not allowed to carry out the duties assigned to it by the mayor.
The Deputy Major was confident that the Mayor would take up the issue on his return from Colombo.
Meanwhile a meeting of the authorities at the Kandy General Hospital last Friday stressed the need to keep the main approach road to the General Hospital clean and said the land belonged to the hospital should be cleared of unauthorised vendors and unauthorised settlers.
Governor Central Tikiri Kobbekaduwa and Mayor Aluwihare were present at the special meeting with the relevant officials.
Chairman Kandy Hospital Committee Mohan Samarakoon presided.
