In a drive to make Sri Lanka self sufficient on food
Govt. to take over uncultivated arable land

To encourage paddy and vegetable farmers in the Kurunegala and Puttalam Districts of the NWP to cultivate every inch of cultivable land available, the Department of Agriculture and Agrarian Services have decided to take over the lands and paddy fields that have not been put into use by the owners.

Assistant Director of Agriculture in Bingiriya J. M. Kumarasinghe told "The Island" that the government had the power to take over any arable land that had not been used for cultivation.

Minister of Agriculture Hemakumara Nanayakkara has instructed Officials of the Agricultural Ministry of the Agricultural Ministry to expedite the cultivation process in order to make the country self sufficient in food during the next two years
