Opposition demands explanation on war situation
Is ceasefire on as stated by India?

A UNP led four-party alliance has asked the government to summon Parliament immediately and inform the people’s representatives, about the exact state of military operations against the LTTE.

The UNP, SLMC, SLFP (M) and the Democratic National Front, in a Memorandum submitted to Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremenayake, have said that the long suffering masses have a right to a clear explanation, in view of the contradictory statements being made by the government and the international community including India.

General Secretary of the UNP, Tissa Attanayake told The Island that while the government claims there has been no ceasefire, but only a halt in the use of heavy weapons and combat aircraft, several countries including India have said that the war was over.

"The Indian Union Home Affairs Minister P. Chidambaram has told the Press Trust of India that Sri Lankan military operations against the LTTE have been stopped and a ceasefire was in place, following pressure applied by the Indian government. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi who was on a death fast ended it, after what he said was the Sri Lankan government’s assurance of the war being halted."

Attanayake said that in view of the confusion the government was duty bound to inform Parliament about the exact situation that prevails in Puttumattalan, where LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran and other senior leaders of the organization are said to be trapped. "If it is unable to summon Parliament, then President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who has assured the people that the LTTE would be wiped out completely, should make an honest statement devoid of any rhetoric."
