WDJ denies truce claim

Power and Energy Minister W. D. J. Seneviratne yesterday denied a claim made by American Embassy Charge de Affaires James Moore that the Government had decided to implement a ceasefire with the LTTE.

The Minister and Moore were addressing the launching ceremony of the South Asian Regional Centre for Energy Efficient Lighting at Hotel Taj-Samudra.

After Moore’s address, Seneviratne said that Government had no intention of implementing a ceasefire with the LTTE. He said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa had instructed the security forces not to use heavy weapons in their offensives against the LTTE since there are still around 20,000 civilians held as hostages by the terrorists.

On the South Asian Regional Centre for Energy Efficient Lighting, the Minister said it would provide sufficient knowledge on efficient distribution of electricity. It would also upgrade the electrification schemes, Seneviratne said.

He said that the Government was providing electricity to 82 per cent of the population. "The Indo-Sri Lanka electricity transmission network would come into operation this year and would solve a number of problems connected with the supply of electricity," he said.
