Surgical castration of women in Sri Lanka

Castration of women is the surgical removal of both ovaries. The Ovaries are the female gonads like the testes are for the male. Internationally it is widely accepted, since the 1980’s that Consultant Gynecologists recommend such obsolete surgical interventions even when there is no acute or life-threatening medical justification for the same. Most women, who complain of even a mildly malfunctioning re-productive organ with benign tumors like fibroids and some mild symptoms during their late middle age, are given the prescription of TAH i.e. Total Abdominal Hysterectomy, meaning the removal of the Uterus, and Bilateral Salpingo-oophrectomy, (BSO) which means the surgical taking out of the ovaries and fallopian tubes

Hence the complete removal of the ovaries in females amounts to their being castrated to which they give misinformed consent based on cursory mathematical equations or prescriptive diagnosis as TAH+BSO which they cannot understand. This is because the term castration is never used but instead misnomers like TAH and BSO are used to clothe reality with technical terminology.

It is a fact that castration - removal of the ovaries - results in the loss of the production of many essential hormones, as Estrogen and Progesterone, naturally produced by the ovaries. These hormones, though gradually lessening in production as the woman ages, provides a valuable sense of healthy well-being, skin tone, elasticity and femininity to the woman even after she is 60 years old. The continued production of hormones by the ovaries in the woman, even after their fertility and re-productive cycle is over, has been medically proven to prevent the incidence of heart failure, decrease bone loss or osteoporosis. Some studies suggest that such castration in women, through surgical removal of ovaries, may give rise to serious debilitating conditions in women who are prone to Alzheimer’s Disease, Dementia and Parkinson’s Disease.

It is an established fact, therefore, that the essential hormones produced by the Ovaries are a pre-requisite for the continued good health, well-being and overall femaleness of the woman. A woman will no longer be a woman once she is surgically castrated. This castration will accelerate the natural and gradual process of aging gracefully like the way we see in nature. Most women, who through their inordinate trust in medical consultants have only accelerated the process of aging and disease in themselves by unwittingly subjecting themselves to surgical castration,. They live to regret it for the rest of their lives.

Surgical castration of women often results in the immediate destabilization of their health with disconcerting symptoms such as hot flushes, depression, fatigue, weight gain, etc., of sudden onset of menopause as the production of hormones by the ovaries ceases.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). is the Ultimate Solution advanced by the medical specialist for this sad and pitiable condition to which the woman is reduced by careless , impersonal and mechanical prescriptions of consultants for surgical castration . There have been many studies to show in the 2002 Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) and the 2004 "Estrogen Only Study" that the artificial introduction of hormones, through external medication, could result in many risk factors as venous thrombosis, strokes, cancer, in addition to the unpleasant side effects such as anxiety, depression and weight gain. Despite some controversy about these research findings, it is a fact that medical specialists the world over are cautious in prescribing synthetic hormones and are more in favour of letting patients ingest natural supplements such as bio-identical hormones occurring naturally in foods to restore their hormonal balance after losing the organs that naturally produce them. Does replacing what nature continues to give you albeit in reduced form, compensate for the thousands of deaths counted among patients who are on prescription drugs?

The standard medical reason given by physicians who recommend the barbaric and archaic practice of surgical castration is that something should be removed before it goes wrong .

These pundits argue that as women advance in age there could be a danger of them developing cancer of the ovaries! According to this logic, multiple surgeries to remove organs in the body as appendix, spleen, one kidney, one breast, one testis, etc., could be done on the basis that one may get cancer of these organs!! Despite the incidence of ovarian cancer being in the region of less than 1% in women who have had no family history of the same, this kind of standard mechanized surgical intervention has become the bane of informed consent by the victims. Fear of possible cancer of the reproductive organs are dinned into the vulnerable minds of those women who are facing surgery, often making them blindly agree to losing their vital organs.

In the USA, where there is increasing enlightenment about the incidence of tragic but voluntary subjection of women to castration, there have been reports which have documented that more male Consultants/Doctors prescribe surgical castration to women than their female counterparts. Also these practices have escalated amongst less educated and depressed black communities.

Strangely enough there is no such widespread counterpart castration undertaken in men the world over. The past history of subjugation of women and the fact that most women, in traditional societies, like Sri Lanka, are docile, obedient and mild in their attitudes, and regard their Doctors as Gods, further predicate their blind consent to castration.
