Three TMVP cadres arrested by the Batticaloa police on Monday, in connection with the abduction and murder of 8-year-old schoolgirl Sathiskumar Thinushika in Batticaloa, were shot dead by the Police in the early hours of yesterday. Police said they had to open fire in self defence when the suspects brandished a T-56 at them.
The child went missing while returning from school on Tuesday April 28. Thereafter, her family received several telephone calls demanding a ransom of Rs 3 million for her safe return. The abductors also threatened to kill the child if the ransom was not paid.

Since the Colombo Municipal Council commenced dumping the garbage collected in the city at Meetotamulla, the people living in the adjoining area have been subjected to great inconvenience. Students of Meetotamulla Sri Rahula Vidyalaya, unable to tolerate the stink, staged a huge protest along with their parents and neighbours. This was the scene in a class room before the commencement of the protest.
