8th Asian Baseball Championship
Sri Lanka wins encouraging 3rd place

In the 8th Asian Baseball Championship, which was held in Bangkok, Thailand, from May 24 to 31 with the participation of ten Asian countries, Sri Lanka Baseball team secured an admirable 3rd place.

This will be a grand milestone for Sri Lanka baseball as this goes down as the highest that a national baseball team has ever achieved in the history of the sport here.

Host Thailand, Pakistan and Malaysia were in group ‘A’ along with Sri Lanka and in the opening match Sri Lanka beat the Thais by 3-1.

But in the 2nd game, losing their winning momentum, they bowed down to Pakistan 9-1. But in the 3rd game, they outplayed Malaysia by 9-1 and secured a place in the semi-finals.

In the semis, they lost to Indonesia mainly due to their poor fielding and thereby lost any hopes of playing in the final. But they finished the championship as 2nd runner-up as they beat Hong Kong in the 3rd place play-off.

The Sri Lankan team was captained by Amila Pathiraja while Shinya Urushibara was their team coach.
