Fazly Ahamed wins Mark Bostock Memorial Trophy

Ashar Fazley Ahamed won the Mark Bostock Memorial Trophy at the Mark Bostok Memorial Golf championship organised by the Victoria Golf and Country Resort and worked off at the picturesque Victoria Golf Course at Rajawella off Kandy.

Azhar Fazley Ahamed two months ago won the Rotarian International Golf Championship and displayed in no uncertain terms that it was no flash in the pan when he pocketed the Mark Bostock Memorial Trophy from a field of over 70 golfers.

Playing to a handicap of 20, he registered a score of 41 with Sam Gunaratne (handicap 11) and Noel Joseph (handicap 20) also equaling this score. But on a count back on the last nine holes, Azhar Fazley Ahamed edged out the other two by a very close margin.

But Sam Gunaratne’s performance did not go unrecorded as he won the Gross Championship for men with a score of 31 points to lift the Ken Balendra Trophy while Sanjeewa Wickremanayake of Royal Colombo Golf Club who got 30 points finished as the runner-up.

Versatile golfer Niloo Jayatillake with a gross score of 26 lifted the Tony Witham Trophy with Sawanestha Selvaratnam as runner-up with the latter getting 20.

The Ladies’ Nett title was won by M. Peter with 34 nett playing to a handicap but she had a close call from Jyoti Haynes who equalled her score of 34 but emerged winner on a count back on the last nine holes.

Niloe Jayatillake rounded off a good day’s golf by winning the longest drive for ladies with a mighty swipe bettering some of the hits by the men.

Doing the honours at the awards ceremony which followed later in the evening at the clubhouse were Mrs. Lif Bostock, wife of the late Mark Bostock, Christie Thornton and Director John Keells Limited Lalith Ramanayake. General Manager of Victoria Golf and Country Resort Errol Johnston acted as the master of ceremonies.
