Mumbai beat Bangalore by 16 runs in IPL
PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa (AP) - Ajinkya Rohane and J.P. Duminy scored unbeaten half-centuries Sunday to steer the Mumbai Indians to a 16-run victory over the Bangalore Royal Challengers in the Indian Premier League.
Rahane made 62 and Duminy 52 at St. George's Park and put on a third-wicket partnership of 104 to help Mumbai to 157-2.
Harbhajan Singh then took 2-15 with all four other bowlers taking a single wicket to restrict Bangalore to 141-7.
The 20-year-old Rahane of India hit four boundaries and a six in 49 balls, while Duminy, an emerging star for South Africa, cracked two boundaries and three sixes in 41 balls.
"The plan was to get singles, wait for the bad ball and capitalize," Rahane said.
Mark Boucher played a cameo innings for Bangalore, ending unbeaten on 48.
Bangalore lost its first wicket when Jacques Kallis on 12 attempted to cut a delivery from Dwayne Bravo for Dhawal Kulkarni to take a low catch at short leg.
Robin Uthappa followed in the fifth over, finding Sachin Tendulkar at midwicket off Kulkarni for 4.
Leg-spinner Chetanya Nanda, making his IPL debut, had Virat Kohli caught by Duminy at midwicket in his first over to reduce Bangalore to 40-3.
Rahul Dravid was then run out by a combination of Lasith Malinga and Singh to leave Bangalore in trouble at 58-4.
Malinga compounded Bangalore's problems when he bowled Ross Taylor for 16 with a trademark yorker 16 runs later.
Singh took the last two wickets as Roloef van der Merwe (3) and Vinay Kumar (7) were both stumped by Yogesh Takawale while looking for big shots.
Boucher was then joined by Anil Kumble (7 not out), but too many runs were required at the end.
Mumbai captain Tendulkar, who was dismissed for a duck to prolong his poor batting form, commended his team.
"I thought we played really well," he said. "The batting was good, the bowling was good and the fielding was good. Generally, it was a good all-around performance."
