More on ‘mastering English’
There were two recent contributions to The Island on ‘Mastering English’, which were interesting reading. I do not know the age group of the contributors but wonder if any of your readers remember any of the following nonsensical Sinhalese expressions.
Many years ago, I am not sure if it is so even now, Maliban Street in Sinhalese was called ‘Maalibantha Veediya’. Maliban is still there, but I am not sure of the Maalibantha.
Also there is a country which we all know as Cambodia. It used to be called Caambojaya!
Like Maliban, the country is also still there. I am less sure of Caambojaya.
I am not a Sinhalese scholar, but I know my language very well. I would be grateful if any of your readers could explain the logic behind this form of expression.
The other side of the coin is nauseating.Oyage birthday ekata wish karanna message ekak thiyenawa. Sic(k).Mentally.
