Bopara gets more practice to help win No. 3 spot

LONDON (AP) - Ravi Bopara continued his attempt to secure the No. 3 spot in England’s batting order by asking to play for his county side ahead of next week’s second test against West Indies.

Bopara hit 143 in this week’s first test but was the only player from that 10-wicket victory to volunteer for an extra game to help him warm up for the second match, which starts Thursday.

Bopara’s century has already made him favorite to fill the berth in this year’s Ashes series against Australia, but he appears to be leaving nothing to chance.

"Ravi felt that he would like another innings," team director Andrew Flower said Saturday. "We have decided to let him play for his county today.’

Bopara will be in action for Essex in a one-day match against Lancashire before rejoining the England squad for the test starting Thursday at Chester-le-Street.
