The Irrigation and Water Management Ministry in collaboration with the Power and Energy Ministry will construct a large scale hydro electricity plant in Wellawaya to generate 300 GWH. This plant will be able to generate power and add 300 GWH to the National Grid, the Irrigation and Water Management Ministry said.
Irrigation and Water Management Ministry Planning Director D.M.Abeyaratne told The Island Financial Review that 300 hours of GWs could be generated through hydro electricity from the reservoir and the plant would simultaneously generate 120 MWs of electricity. The two reservoirs would be constructed in Direba Estate area Mahathotilla and Puhulpola.
He said that the two reservoirs would carry water through a 24 km long tunnel to the Wellawaya electricity generation plant. In addition to electricity generation, the two reservoirs would provide water to Wellawaya, Thanamalwila, Hadapangala and Lunugamvehara areas for paddy and cane cultivations covering 10,000 hectares. The project would also supply water to a large number of subsidiary food crop cultivation projects in the areas.
The Iranian government had given the necessary funds to commence the project and the government was hopeful that the problems faced by the farmers in the areas could be solved through the project.
