The Sri Lanka Muslim Ulemas Party - The Political Movement of Muslim Clergy - wants UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe to appoint a Tamil speaking Western Provincial Councillor as the Opposition Leader of the Western Provincial Council.
SLMUP leader Moulavi Mubarak Abdul Majeed told The Island yesterday that this was that clear the UNP was not ready to accommodate a non-Sinhala candidate as team leader.
He said that although they didn’t have anything against the UNP leader’s choice (Rosie Senanayake) they believed the party should recognize the contribution made by the Tamil speaking people at the April 25 elections at the Western Provincial Council.
He also said UNP Parliamentarian Jayalath Jayawardena openly said that minorities must be respected for voting the UNP but UNP leadership failed to appoint a Tamil or a Muslim.
"Mano Ganeshan also said that even though they don’t agree with the UNP policies they contested the Western Provincial Councils elections with the UNP. In that case Ganeshan and others should have supported the Government", he added.
He also said that despite Government’s humanitarian measure not to use heavy weapons UNP MP Palitha Ranga Bandara said heavy weapons must be used. "This shows they are not worried about fellow countrymen but seek mere political gains by insulting the Government," he said.
