Mastering English
Justin Amerasinghe, in his letter appearing in your issue of 11th May, 2009 states inter alia that "there is a country which we all know as Cambodia. It used to be called Cambojaya" (in Sinhala). If one goes through the names of the 194 countries in the world, one will find that names of over 100 countries, when written in Sinhala, the Sinhala letter ‘ va ‘ or ‘ ya’ has to be added to the original name. e.g. (i) Australiava, Indiava, Canadava, Russiava, Indonesiava, Malaysiava etc., etc., e.g. (ii) Pakistanaya, Cheenaya, Englanthaya, Palestinaya, Switzerlanthaya, etc., etc. It is somewhat strange that we have not meddled with the writing of Norway in Sinhala, although Norway is known for meddling in other spheres!
