The question of consistency
As Mr. S.L. Gunasekara argues in the Island of 12th May, the allegations leveled against Sri Lankan Forces of firing heavy artillery into the ‘No Fire Zone’ are ludicrous because if they were true, the LTTE would only be a "ghastly memory." If only Sri Lanka were to take the cue from the US and UK which jointly bombed Saddam’s Baghdad with no scruples, killing innocent people in their thousands, a few hours would be enough to pulverize the remaining sliver of land under the LTTE in Wanni.
Incidentally, considering their demonstration in Baghdad, the US and UK are not far behind the LTTE or Al Qaeda in their penchant for violence and lack of accountability. As the recent US led attack in Afghanistan in which more than a hundred civilians were killed shows, even the present US administration does not seem bothered about being consistent in what it does and what it preaches.
During the past few weeks, Sri Lankan armed Forces have demonstrated their commitment to saving the lives of the trapped civilians in the way they were inching towards their target, exposing themselves to the gunfire of the LTTE – a commitment which will certainly put to shame the US and UK who think nothing of making pulp of any number of human beings when hunting down "their" terrorists.
