Norwegian Embassy scraps National Day bash

The Norwegian Embassy will not hold its annual garden party on May 17 to coincide with the country’s national day, sources told The Island.

Although some of the regular invitees had been told that the cancellation was due to the recent protests outside the Norwegian Embassy in Colombo following the attack on the Sri Lankan mission in Oslo, well informed sources said that the imminent battlefield defeat of LTTE would have promoted the former peace facilitator to cancel the event.

The celebration on the lawn of the Norwegian Ambassador’s Maitland Crescent residence attracts many Sri Lankan politicians, including almost the entire TNA parliamentary group.

Sources said this year’s low-key celebration would be attended by Norwegians living in Sri Lanka. (SF)
