Kandy - Most Venerable Mahanayaka of Asgiriya Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Thero attributed the victory over the 30-year-old LTTE terrorism in Sri Lanka to President Mahinda Rajapakse’s commitment and right direction and guidance at the right time to the security forces.
He said that LTTE terrorism grew so forcefully and strongly because the previous heads of State failed to take the right decision at the right time.
If the previous leaders had the courage and vision the LTTE terrorism would not have become so strong to destroy so many valuable lives and State properties the prelate told a delegation from the Joint Free Media Forum which called on him Sunday..
Secretary of the Media Forum Ajith Jayasundara, Vice-President Sujeeva Manage and Advisor Premalal Keppitigoda comprised the delegation.
The Mahanayake Thero said that the only leader who had the determination to rout out terrorism and restore peace in the country was President Mahinda Rajapaksa. The previous leaders had no firm plan of action. They commenced on some plan of action and later gave it up and that allowed the LTTE to regain lost strength and continue for years.
Hundreds of thousands of lives o0f the Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim communities were lost and thousands of security forces personnel died as a result of the prolonged war. This would not have happened had terrorism been nipped in the bud, the prelate said.
He also said the country owed a debt of gratitude to the President, Secretary Defence, heads of armed forces and the police and in particular to the heroic Ranaviruvo for their sacrifices to defeat LTTE terrorism. "However, we should not forget that South Indians invaded Sri Lanka and ruled the country. Strong rulers freed the country from those rulers."
He said Sinhala people never harmed other communities. Sinhala Buddhists have been a hospitable race. But they detest aggression. The LTTE’s objective was to destroy the Sinhala Buddhist community. "However, we should not forget that some other community is also carrying on an unarmed invasion of the Sinhala people. If we fail to take pecautions we will face the same fate as Indonesia and Iran.
The prelate said that the State had to shoulder the responsibility of developing all parts of the country specially the region that was devastated by the war and LTTE activities. The media had an important role to play.
The government should be vigilant to ensure that terrorism would not raise its ugly head again the prelate added.
