The house was situated at the bottom of a hillock and the earthslip followed two days of continuous rain.

The dead have been identified as R. G. Jayatilleke Bandara (33) father, R. M. Thushari Dayangana Rajapaksa (31), wife, R. G. Ranjani Nitani Jayatilleke (9) daughter and R. G. Rajani Jayatilleke (2), daughter and two visitors to the house R. H. Samantha Roshan Rajapaksa (33) and Sanjeewa Dhammika Fernando (34).
