Bone Health Check Centre launched

An MoU was signed between Nawaloka Hospital and Fonterra Bone Health Brand – ‘Anelene,’ to provide over 50,000 bone health checks at the Nawaloka Hospital by establishing a ‘Bone Health Check Centre,’ at the Nawaloka Hospital. The main aim of the Centre would be to prevent and raise an awareness of Osteoporosis in Sri Lanka.

Signing the MoU with Fonterra Brands, Deputy Chairman of Nawaloka Hospital, Jayantha Dharmadasa said yesterday (21) that the two institutions – Fonterra and Nawaloka Hospital, shared the same vision of prevention and early detection to maintain good health. The Bone Health Centre (BHC) which is to be located in the hospital’s ground floor will provide scanning facilities and advice to 50,000 Lankan’s within the coming year, he said.

The WHO has identified Osteoporosis as a major public health issue. It identifies it as a possible threat to Asia in 2050 as fifty percent of all Osteoporotic hip fractures will take place in this region. In Sri Lanka an estimated 45 percent post menopausal women are likely to suffer from the disease.

Osteoporosis is a skeletal disorder that leads to an increased risk of fracture- a major cause for disability, loss of independence and in some cases may lead to the death of the patient, they added.
