Nandamithra’s impending appointment as MP

Rohana Bandaranayake of the UNP has in a petition, in the Supreme Court, challenged the impending act of the Elections Commissioner to declare Nandimithra Ekanayake as an MP for the Matale District, to fill the vacancy created by the death of Alick Aluwihare of the UNP on May 16, 2009.

The petitioner said that Ekanayake had left the UNP and joined the UPFA. The petitioner who contested the poll at the General Election of April 2004 and secured fourth place in the UNP preference list, should be declared an MP. Although Ekanayake secured the third place, he is now in the UPFA. An act by the Elections Commissioner to declare Ekanayake the MP is arbitrary, the petition said.
