GNOA fights for health workers forced to work in LTTE hospitals

The Government Nursing Officers’ Association urged the Health Ministry to re-absorb all government health workers forcibly retained by the LTTE to run their hospitals. There are over 22 nursing officers and over hundred health workers in this predicament.

These health workers who worked at hospitals in LTTE controlled areas escaped to welfare camps along with the IDPs when the military paved the way for them to escape from the LTTE clutches.

President of the Government Nursing Officers Association (GNOA), Saman Ratnapriya said yesterday (21) that they were visiting the four IDP camps in the North to gather information on the health workers – especially the nursing officers, to present a report to Health Secretary, Dr. Athula Kahandaliyanage.

They were forcibly taken by the LTTE while serving in government hospitals and were able to escape only when the LTTE began losing the war. At present they are living as IDP’s, he said. The government re- instated five doctors who had also been taken by the LTTE at the Vavuniya General Hospital. "We will re-absorb the nurses and the other health workers who are amongst the thousands of displaced persons at Kilinochchi and Mannar, Ratnapriya said.
