Barbaric sports inculcate an element of coarseness in the contestants. boxing wu shu, Judo, wrestling, and such like sports should have no place in this age and time. Such sports bring out the brute in man. For the exercise of the mind there is the Personal Computer, the chess and draughts boards the pack of cards and possibly the carrom board. For outdoor sports that exercise both the body and mind are cricket, rugby, football, hockey, baseball, netball, and such games.
With dangerous sports resulting in death, concussion and permanent disfigurement, milder sports would be more in keeping with the aspiration of society to foster gentleness. Serene placidity will be welcome instead of bringing out the lout, the boor and the ruffian that lies dormant in man. We must bear in mind that man too is an animal and has to be tamed. It is possible that the barbaric wars of primitive civilizations , fashioned and crystallized sports such as fencing, wushu etc. Children watching elders in such competitions are progressively brainwashed into believing that might is right. That is what is inculcated in the growing mind. The lion cub learns to stalk animals from its mother.
Dare-devil car and motorcycle races are sponsored by manufactures of motor vehicles, endangering the lives of competitors. It is time society had a closer look at these sports, and sought to replace them with gentler more civil sports.
