

Sri Lanka’s Vimuktha de Alwis won in both 800m and 1500m races at the Under-15 FOBISSEA Games held in Bangkok, Thailand, from May 7-9.
FOBISSEA is an annual event of the Federation of British International Schools in South East Asia, traditionally organised by one of the schools based in the region. Harrow International School in Bangkok was the organiser of this year’s event.
De Alwis, a prominent Under-14 Sri Lanka tennis player who represented the country in the last version of the Junior Davis Cup, has won many an accolade in athletics too, especially in running, in the Indonesian junior schools circuit.
FOBISSEA includes schools from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam and Brunei.
De Alwis won the Gold medal in 800m finishing the final with a lead of about 20m from the 2nd place holder, a British national from Tanglin Trust School of Singapore, recording a fine timing of 2.03 mins. A participant from Bangkok Patana School won the 3rd place.
Following a 25 minutes recovery time, de Alwis won the Gold again in the 1500m, which is his pet event, with a lead of about 125m and a timing of 4.37 mins. defeating one from Alice Smith School, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 2nd place and a rep from British School, Manila, in 3rd. De Alwis has been dominating these long distance events at the FOBISSEA Games for the past six years.
It was only last month that de Alwis won an Indonesian Junior National Under-16 tennis tournament, organised by the MAESA Indonesia Sports Association, in Jakarta. (RSS)
