KANDY: A consignment of essential food items and clothes valued at over three million rupees for Internally Displaced Persons at the Menik Farm was sent by the people of Kandy on Saturday.
A convoy carrying the relief items had left Kandy for Vavuniya, said the Kandy GA Gotabhaya Jayaratne, who is in charge of welfare assistance to the displaced persons in Menik Farm division.
The consignment included over 10,500 tents, GA Jayaratne said. Permanent houses would be provided to the families subsequently, he said.
He said that the relief material had been collected with the assistance of the Central Province Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake, Chief Secretary P. G. Amarakoon, Divisional Secretaries, Buddhist organisations and the Kandy business community.
More and more people are coming forward to help their displaced counterparts in the Vanni. All religious and community organisations are engaged in fund raising and collecting relief material to be sent to Vavuniya where the war affected people are sheltered.
