Under-17 basketball
tournament reaches  second round

Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda qualified for the quarter-finals with an unbeaten record after finishing as table leaders in Group ‘D’ in the ongoing Under-17 ‘B’ Division Inter-School basketball tournament played at De Mazenod College Courts, Kandana yesterday.

Dharmasoka beat Azhar Central 59-54 in their first game played yesterday before securing an 80-70 win over De Mazenod.

Azar Central qualified after beating St. Sebastian’s College, Kandana and De Mazenod College. St. Sebastian’s finished third in the group with their solitary win over De Mazenod.

Elsewhere at Mutwal, Prince of Wales, College, Moratuwa beat Lyceum International School, Nugegoda by one point in a Group ‘C’ match played at De La Salle College courts yesterday.

Both Lyceum and Prince of Wales had already qualified to the second round and when they met yesterday afternoon they were basically vying for the number one slot in the group and it was Prince of Wales with a one point win who walked home with an unbeaten run having played their first game of the tournament on Saturday with merely five players.

Prince of Wales also beat Christ King College, Ja-Ela 61-32 while Lyceum cruised pass Mahinda College, Galle with a 65-43 win in the morning.

Meanwhile, in Group ‘A’ Colombo International School finished on top after beating D.S. Senanayake College, Colombo 52-44 at D.S. Senanayake College courts. D.S. too booked their place in the next round with a 72-36 win over Mahanama College, Colombo.

It was Asian International School, Colombo who finished with an unbeaten record in Group ‘B’ following their wins over Carey College, Colombo, St. Anthony’s College, Katugastota and St. Anne’s College, Kurunegala. The matches of Group ‘B’ were played at Amal International School courts in Wellawatta.
